Networking for Business Success in a Changing World
Experienced business networkers are well aware of the benefits effective networking and building successful networks. But, in today’s changing world, the question is “Do the same rules apply and how do I build and maintain my networks?”
You may be surprised to know that rather than being restrictive, the impacts of COVID, technology and new ways of doing business have opened up our world more than ever.
How can this be? Well, if you are a seasoned networker, attending meetings and events, exchanging business cards and meeting new contacts, you may have been somewhat frustrated by the social distancing, limits on numbers at gatherings and even restrictions regarding catering.
However, these restrictions have also been a catalyst for businesses to take a more outward focused perspective and seek contacts and networks which may be outside their usual circles.
This changed environment has also meant more than ever, a focus on building relationships and being sincere in seeking and sharing information with people. Remaining front of mind and relevant and being authentic, honest and as natural as possible have escalated in importance as well as considering what value you can bring to a business relationship, helping to create a win-win scenario for all involved.
There are still some basic principles which apply whether you are networking in a face-to-face or virtual situation:
- Find relevant networking groups and organisation that align with your values
- Ask others in your industry to recommend networking groups
- The same rules apply online as they do in person – communication is a two way-way process
- Always make it about the other person first. Be attentive to what they are saying and don’t make it all about you!
- Understand you are there to build and strengthen relationships not necessarily make sales. If you successfully build these relationships, sales will generally follow later.
Applying these principles, being mindful about how you network and the benefits you bring to every engagement may help set you apart in a crowded networking world!
